The incident took place on the M7 on Thursday afternoon.
A post mortem will be carried out today on the body of a pensioner killed in a road crash in Co. Laois.
The two car collision happened just after 4 o'clock yesterday on the M7 at Borris-in-Ossory.
The woman who was aged in her 80's died when the car she was driving hit another vehicle.
A woman in her 50's also suffered serious but not life threatening injuries.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
