Offaly's U-16s were also in action in an All-Ireland Final.
There was little cheer for Offaly or Westmeath on the opening weekend of the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship.
Both suffered comprehensive defeats at the hands of Tipperary and Galway.
Westmeath are in a bit of a rebuild following the departures of Pamela Greville, Mairéad McCormack and Denise McGrath and Darren McCormack would have been expecting a tough game against the beaten finalists of 2020.
He can be pleased with how the lake county started the game but beyond the 15th minute, Galway's class and experience was telling.
There'll be many more winnable games in the future but this should be chalked up as a learning exercise.
3-16 to 1-5 the final score.

Super effort from our girls 👏👏👏#AllIrelandChampionship #Camogie
It was much a similar situation for Offaly at home in Banagher.
Four of Offaly's attackers managed to register a score but it fell on the shoulders of Mairead Teehan to carry the workload, she accounted for 1-7 of their 1-12 score.
The Faithful defenders were in a similar pickle trying to contain Tipp's depth of scoring.
Cait Devane ticked over 0-9 but it was the power packed performance of Orla O'Dwyer from midfield that provided the real hammer blow.
The AFL star struck 3-3 and was almost unplayable for the majority of the game.
3-23 to 1-12 the end result.
Their final group game involves a trip to face Wexford next Saturday afternoon.
As the sun set this evening, we reflect on what was a difficult day for our Senior and Under 16 teams. Our senior girls will dust themselves down and prepare for next weekend’s match against @wexfordcamogie while our Under 16 girls return to their clubs for the club championship pic.twitter.com/YOB3KdQY9D

A special mention is also reserved for Offaly's U-16 girls who were in All-Ireland 'B' Final action last weekend.
Despite registering an excellent 4-12 on the day, Offaly were just outgunned in the first half by opponents Meath.
The Royals scored six first half goals to lead 6-2 to 1-7 at the break.
The Faithful found their scoring boots in the second period but were unable to bridge the gap and it finished 9-13 to 4-12.
Great pride in the jersey shown by all on the day.
