Tullamore Harriers Show Up Well At National Championships

There's also some decent performances in the US to get up to date with.

It was a stellar weekend of athletics action at the 2022 Irish Life Health National Senior Indoor Championships, at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Abbotstown, Dublin. Over 500 athletes battled it out for national honors.

First out in the middle distance events for Tullamore was Ruby Stueven in the 1500m. Still only 18 Ruby acquitted herself well in her 1500m heat and raced to a time of 4.45.54.

Mark Milner also raced on the Saturday and cruised through his 800m heat in a time of 1.53.28.

On the Sunday Tullamore had three athletes in the 3000m. All three ran well. Danielle Donegan was first home in a time in 9.45.00, with Imelda Lambe in 10.09.80 and Emily Grennan in 10.15.74 racing well too.

Milner was back on track at 14.35 in the final of his 800m. In a tactical race Mark positioned himself well and was ready for the attacks on the last lap. With national record holder Mark English sprinting clear of the challengers it was a dash between three athletes for the silver and bronze with Mark unlucky to finish fourth, just out of the medals.

Overall the club is very proud of the young men and women now stepping up to perform at a senior level.

Big Performances from Harriers Athletes in Illinois, Colorado, Missouri and Massachusetts

Laura Mooney was competing last Friday and Saturday at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships in Chicago, Illinois. Laura raced the 5000m on the Friday and finished runner-up in a new PB of 16.18.49 as she just held off the third place finisher by .4 of a second. On the Saturday Laura also made the podium as she raced to third in the 3000m having ran a time of 9.22.96. Her pace was really consistent throughout the race as she hit 37 seconds each of the first fourteen laps before speeding for for a 36 on the last lap.

Ava O’Connor was competing last Saturday at the RMAC Indoor Track and Field Championships in Gunnison, Colorado. With the track being a 200m flat track at 7723 feet altitude it was definitely a challenging environment. Racing the Mile, Ava was at the front from the early stages. After the half way mark Ava was passed twice by different athletes who tried to get clear of the pack by picking up the pace. Each time Ava was able to hang on and quickly retake the lead. She won with a final sprint which saw her cross the line in a time of 5.03.72, which is adjusted by the NCAA to a time of 4.47 to allow for the track bends and the altitude.

Aaron Mangan was in action on Saturday and Sunday in the 800m at the MIAA Indoor Championships in Maryville, Missouri. Against tough competition Aaron had to run 1.52.52 to qualify for the final. In the final Aaron raced well and almost matched his heat time as he finished seventh in 1.52.53.

On Sunday James Dunne was competing in the Boston University Last Chance Meet. Lining up in heat one of the men's 3000m, James got into the rhythm of the 32 second laps the pack was setting as he sat back. After passing a mile in 4.17 James started to press. By the finish line he was up to 4th place and had run a huge new PB of 7.54.73. He had covered the last kilometer in 2.33 and as he raced for the line his last lap was 29 seconds. He is now ranked in fourth on the Irish Senior ravings less than five seconds off the World Indoor Championships standard.
