On the programme this week the budget takes centre stage as MJ chats to Marty Murphy from IFAC accountants on the different measures affecting farmers. With sheep payments rising to €20 per ewe and €200 being guaranteed for suckler cows, the government is targeting these low income sectors. A new one hectare forestry scheme launched last week sees payments front loaded for the first ten years. With over €20,000 on offer this scheme is attracting huge interest and Liam Kelly from Teagasc chats about it. The Shorthorn Marketing Company are a producer group that offers a bonus for shorthorn beef breeds. Laois man Peter Luttrell speaks about an upcoming shorthorn sale in Roscrea Mart and how the breed are attracting interest especially from part time farmers due to ease of calving and docility. Niall McCormack from the IFA chats about a recent boost for the horticulture sector with over 2 million of funding for the sector however the exclusion of strawberry and white mushroom growers is causing unrest. A young boy from Kinnity Co. Offaly lost his leg in a tragic farm accident earlier in the year and Dolores Flaherty speaks about an upcoming event where both volunteers and ideas are wanted for the "Doing it for Dennedy" campaign to raise money for Micheal Dennedy. Timber Croc is a well known product which aids the cutting of timber with a chainsaw. Des Geraghty speaks about the product which is both labour saving and safe. It's a real success story for an Irish business with products now being shipped to Europe and the USA.
