Episode 11
Shine A Light
Friday, 23 October 2026 - 44 minutes
Instead of accepting the loneliness that comes with chemotherapy. Tullamore cancer survivor Vanessa Mooney has decided to do something about it. With a background in graphic design, she created a free app "Someone Like Me," which connects people affected by cancer with others who understand their experience.
The app is currently being piloted at St. Vincents Private Hospital Dublin.
One of the app's biggest benefits is that support is available at any time, whether its 3am or 6am. Users can ask questions about surgery, chemotherapy and other aspects of their cancer journey while connecting with people who understand what they are going through.
Vanessa says the app has already made a real difference, as two women undergoing chemotherapy at the same hospital connected through the app and now meet for coffee.
She says having someone who understands their situations make this experience feel less isolating.
There is also a private section for family members to chat and support each
other during this difficult time.
The Tullamore woman says support continues even after treatment ends.
The app offers resources such as care packages and access to counsellors who help people cope with anxiety and trauma.
Vannessa's message is simple: "Nobody should have to face cancer alone." Through "Someone Like Me," she is creating a supportive community where people can find guidance and realise they are never alone in this journey.
Also on Shine A Light this week, there's a new four-legged friend making a big difference at a Midlands School.
Therapy dog Viola has been enrolled at Presentation Primary School in Portarlington.
She's settling into school life, getting to know the pupils, and already bringing plenty of smiles along the way.
With almost 500 pupils, including five special classes, the hope is that this furry friend will help children feel calmer, build confidence and feel supported throughout the school day.
So, how is the newest member of the school community getting on, and what difference is the dog making to pupils and staff?
Midlands 103's Abi McMahon went along to find out more and begins this report by speaking with teacher Karen Monaghan:
