A staff recruitment process is currently underway.

18 new step-down beds are set to come on stream at Abbeyleix Hospital in the coming weeks.

Works have recently been carried out to provide the additional beds under the HSE Winter Plan, and will open once the current recruitment process is complete.

Fianna Fáil TD Seán Fleming says the new unit will offer space for those convalescing upon leaving Portlaoise and Tullamore Regional Hospitals.

The Laois-Offaly reps says a further 10 single rooms are also in development:
