Fleadh Cheoil Needs More Recognition - Westmeath Councillor

Mullingar last hosted the Fleadh Cheoil in 2022.

Councillor Denis Leonard believes the origins of the Fleadh Cheoil deserve the same recognition.

Organisations such as Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann are struggling to receive the same level of recognition as the GAA.

That's according to Mullingar councillor Denis Leonard, who recently put forward a motion to erect a plaque in Market Square to mark the origins of the Fleadh Cheoil in the town.

The public representative has faced opposition from the council executive over the proposal.

However, Cllr Leonard believes there are inconsistencies in the response he has received.

The main concern raised was that the building in Market Square is a protected structure, meaning permission would be required for any permanent installation.

Instead, the council suggested that Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann could mark the anniversary by placing the plaque on a temporary plinth during the celebrations.

Áras an Mhuilinn was also put forward as a possible permanent location for the plaque.

Cllr Leonard questioned the reasoning behind this suggestion, pointing out that Áras an Mhuilinn is also a protected structure.

He referenced the GAA's recognition of the founding of the organisation at Hayes Hotel in 1884, arguing that the protected status of a building should not prevent important local history from being acknowledged.

He believes the origins of the Fleadh Cheoil deserve the same recognition, particularly given the event's significance to Mullingar and the wider Midlands:
