The singer reportedly fell from the balcony of a hotel in Argentina, where he'd been to catch up with his old band mate, Mullingar's Niall Horan.
Police say he had "extremely serious injuries", and pronounced him dead at the scene.
They say the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, but they had been aware of a man reportedly under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
