There are just 22 properties available to rent in two midlands counties for those who are receiving the housing assistance payment.
That's the finding of a recent three day survey by the Simon Community which included Athlone and Portlaoise.
The gap between the maximum HAP payment for a couple and the average rent in the Westmeath town is almost €300.
