An Athlone priest is being ordained as Bishop of Clonfert this weekend.

Father Michael Duignan was appointed to the position by Pope Francis in July, having previously been chaplain at St. Angela's and Summerhill Colleges in Sligo.

He succeeds Bishop John Kirby, who's been in the position since 1988 and also comes from the same parish of St. Peter's in Athlone.

His episcopal ordination ceremony takes place in Saint Brendan's Cathedral, Loughrea, County Galway at 3 o'clock this Sunday - and will also be streamed online.
