Athlone Rescue Operation Called Off After Body Found

A rescue operation in the River Shannon has concluded after the discovery of a man's body.

A man entered the water from the Town Bridge at around 7.30am this morning.

An immediate rescue was attempted by a passer-by, but that was unsuccessful.

Athlone Gardaí, the Athlone Sub-Squa Club, the RNLI, and the Athlone River Safety Group had been conducting a rescue operation on the river since.

Gardaí say a body has been found in the past 15 minutes.

Emergency services have since left the scene.
