The Athlone Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the oil spill in the River Shannon is very serious.

Westmeath County Council sent out an emergency team on Saturday to investigate and begin the clean-up.

Athlone SPCA Welfare Officer says it is currently effecting 100s of metres of the River and has reached the canal.
