Gardaí and a local mechanic helped get the child to safety.
Gardaí have rescued a child from a locked car in the midlands.
The three Gardaí, who were on the way back to Athlone following a prisoner escort to Longford, were flagged down by a woman who had locked her young child, car keys and handbag inside the car on a very warm day.
Sergeant Bobby Feery, Garda Jennifer Cassells and Student Garda Cathal Kenny, along with a mechanic, fished the keys from the woman's handbag inside the car, and made the rescue.
