Councillor Frankie Keena says he expects work to start on a new link road soon.
After years of delays Athlone could be on the cusp of seeing work start on its largest ever housing development.
Westmeath County Council has heard the commencement notice for a 576 unit project in Lissywollen will be issued very soon.
The development, which will be known as Plovers Wood, will require the construction of a link road which is set to be named Lissywollen Avenue.
The project will include 174 units for social housing which will make a significant dent in the waiting list of 729 in the Athlone/Moate area at the moment.
