The numbers of psychiatric patients in prisons in Ireland is at crisis point, and it's just the tip of the iceberg.
That's according to a Former Assistant Governor of Portlaoise Prison after an RTE Investigates programme revealed 38 people are being held in prisons as they wait for a place in the Central Mental Hospital.
Manager of criminal rehab group Alternative Project, Ciaran Reilly, says there's many more prisoners who should be in psych-wards instead of cells.
He says the consequences of the log-jam can be far-reaching:
