The company that built schools later found to have structural problems, is to build a new hospital ward in Limerick.

The Department of Education is pursuing legal action against Western Building Systems after 42 schools were found to have structural defects - including Mullingar Educate Together National School and Maryborough National School in Portlaoise.

The HSE awarded the developer the contract for the new 60 bed ward at University Hospital Limerick earlier this year.

The UL Hospitals Group says it expects the ward to be open by next winter.
