5,381 PCR-confirmed cases of covid-19 have been reported today.
The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been notified of 5,381 PCR-confirmed cases of COVID-19.
In addition, on Tuesday 29 March, 7,127 people registered a positive antigen test through the HSE portal.
As of 8am today, 1,610 COVID-19 patients are hospitalised, of whom 49 are in ICU.
It comes as the Taoiseach says a return to covid restrictions can't be justified.
Amid skyrocketing numbers of Covid cases and pressure on the hospital system Micheál Martin has said severe illness is not increasing.
The number of people in ICU has remained steady even while the numbers in hospital have increased.
With that in mind, Micheál Martin says it's planned to allow legal covid regulations to elapse tomorrow:
