The funds come from the Community Heritage Grant Scheme.

Just over €150,000 has been granted to support Midlands heritage sites.

It's part of a €1.9m investment from the 2025 Community Heritage Grant Scheme.

There's nine projects across Laois, Offaly and Westmeath being supported through the scheme.

There's €25,000 for the Athlone No 1 Gun Battery Heritage Group.

That is the last remaining example of the eight artillery units that were constructed in Athlone around 1795 to defend against possible French attack during the Napoleonic Wars.

Overall five projects in Westmeath are getting a total of €66,000.

Heritage groups in Offaly are also getting €66,000.

The Clara Heritage Society, the Boher-Liss Cemetery Group, and St. Brendan's Roman Catholic Church are all in line for funding.

The Church grant will support the restoration and conservation of the St. Brendan-stained glass window in Birr.

While the Killeshin Waterworks Committee in Laois has secured a total of €22,000 to restore sluice gates in order to enhance biodiversity.
