Former Portlaoise Prison Governor Describes Numbers Serving Life Sentences As 'Alarming'

John Lonergan says they're significant numbers for such a small country.

The number of inmates serving life-sentences in Ireland has been described as 'alarmingly high' by a former governor of Portlaoise Prison.

Freedom of Information figures show there are 362 life sentence prisoners in custody at the moment. 

11 of those are in jail for longer than 35 years.
