A member of Gardaí was assaulted during a protest outside a former midlands army barracks.

Over 30 people gathered outside Columb Barracks in Mullingar yesterday, and were blocking the path of a bus, with asylum seekers on-board, attempting to enter the site.

A male Garda officer was assaulted at around 9pm, after Gardaí requested a number of people blocking the entrance to disperse and allow staff to enter.

He did not require treatment.

A man in his 20s was arrested for public order offences shortly after midnight.

He has since been released and a file will be prepared for the DPP.

The protestors left the scene shortly after 1.30am.
