Gardaí Out In Force For National Slow Down Day

Two midlands motorists are among over 100 drivers who have been detected speeding this morning.

128 vehicles have been caught speeding so far during National Slow Down Day.

Gardai are conducting speed checks around the country as part of the campaign.

One person was driving at 137kmh in a 100kmh zone on the N7 in Dublin.

Another was caught driving at nearly twice the 50kmh speed limit on the Cork Road in Waterford.

While two vehicles were detected driving at 132 kilometres per hour in 100km zones - on the N4 at Clongawny in Mullingar in Co Westmeath, and on the N18 Clonmoney North in Bunratty in Co Clare.

A driver was also clocked at 65km/h in a 50km/h Zone in Bonavalley, Athlone and another motorist was travelling at 20kmph above the limit in Kilcormac.

During the first two hours of the campaign, Gardaí and GoSafe checked 23,275 vehicles and detected 128 vehicles speeding.

'National Slow Down Day' will see Gardaí out in force from 7 o'clock this morning for 24 hours.

They are reminding drivers of the dangers of speeding, as part of their Christmas Campaign to improve road safety.

10 more people have been killed on the roads this year compared to 2019. Last year there were 140 road deaths.

Gardaí say driving too fast is a contributory factor in around one third of crashes where people have died and that the higher the speed, the greater the likelihood is of a crash happening and the more severe the outcome of that collision.
