A number of homes in the Mullingar area are being targeted by the fraudster.

Investigations are underway after a 'distraction theft' in Westmeath left an elderly person robbed of thousands of euro.

The incident happened at a house in Mullingar town yesterday afternoon.

Gardaí say a woman, pretending to raise money for a Ukrainian appeal, has been targeting homes in the area.

They're urging people to be extra vigilant and to not let any callers they don't know to enter their home.

Any suspicious activity should be reported to gardaí.
