It looks like Gareth Sheridan's tilt at the Irish Presidency has ended after Offaly County Council voted resoundingly not to nominate a candidate for the election.
The pharma entrepreneur needed the support of two more county councils to secure passage into the election before Wednesday's deadline.
A proposal for the local authority in Offaly not to nominate a candidate passed with 11 votes in favour, 5 against, 2 abstentions, with one councillor absent.
All Fianna Fail councillors voted against backing Mr Sheridan with the exception of Tullamore rep Frank Moran.
Mr. Sheridan is due to address Louth County Council this evening, however its support, along with Kerry and Tipperary County Councils, would not be enough to contest the election.
County Cathaoirleach John Leahy closed the meeting by acknowledging the result meant the end of the road for him in the county where his campaign started.
