Government party leaders are debating changing legislation to allow the harvesting of peat for horticulture.

The industry has been relying on peat imported from Europe, after Bord na Móna ceased production last year.

However, Junior Agriculture Minister Martin Heydon says an interim report on restarting a small amount of domestic production is currently being considered, with a decision expected "in the not too distant future".

The Kildare-South Fine Gael TD says change is necessary, but it must be a common sense approach:
