The €12m trail is the longest of it's kind in the country.
The new 130 kilometre Royal Canal Greenway is being launched today.
The 12 million euro walking and cycling trail - stretching through Kildare, Meath, Westmeath and Longford - is the longest of its kind in the country.
It also forms of EuroVelo 2, a 5,000 kilometre cycling route that stretches across Europe as far as Moscow.
Chief Executive of Westmeath County Council, Pat Gallagher says it will help establish the region as a key tourism destination:
The new Greenway will lead to endless opportunities for tourism in the region.
