The Sinn Fein Senator is in favour of the measure in place at Stradbally's Droimnin Nursing Home.
A Laois senator wants to see nursing homes become less reliant on the private sector.
It comes after Droimnin Nursing Home in Stradbally was stripped of its registration earlier this month due to concerns about risks to residents’ lives and welfare.
It is now being run by the HSE
