Illegal Peat Extraction Sparks Demand For Stronger Enforcement

Sites in Offaly and Westmeath have been cited for peat extraction.

The Irish Peatland Conservation Council is calling for increased policing of the movement of illegal peat in Ireland.

An EPA report this year highlighted multiple sites in Offaly and Westmeath where suspected illegal extraction has been taking place.

It also details some 3.3 million tonnes of peat exported from Ireland in the last six years.
