It's after a pensioner in Delvin had €10,000 stolen last Friday.
An increase in rural crime is leaving the elderly living in fear.
Sinn Fein deputy Johnny Guirke is making the comments after €10,000 in cash was taken from a pensioner in north Westmeath.
The owner of the house in Delvin who's in his 80's was out shopping when the theft occured.
