Those applying to become an Irish citizen must show a capacity to contribute to society, according to the Taoiseach.

Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan is bringing new proposals before the Cabinet later this week to tighten up citizenship applications.

He's telling the Fianna Fáil think-in this will include changes to how long someone has to have been in the State to apply for citizenship.
