The Justice Minister says it's important to have perjury enshrined in law.

Laois TD Charlie Flanagan is hoping to have new legislation - which could see those who lie in court jailed for up to ten years - passed through the Dáil by the end of next week.

The bill is up for debate in the Dáil tonight, and Minister Flanagan is hoping for all-party support in an attempt to target insurance fraudsters.

He says perjury is a serious offence and needs a statutory definition:
