Kinahan Gang Member Sues State Over Prison Isolation And Mental Health

40-year-old Sean McGovern is held in solitary confinement at Portlaoise Maximum Security Prison.

A member of the Kinahan crime gang is suing the State over his deteriorating mental health at a prison in the Midlands.

40 year old Sean McGovern is being held in solitary confinement in the maximum security prison in Portlaoise.

McGovern has been held and segregated on the Prison's A-Wing after he admitted to directing the activities of a criminal organisation.

He was sentenced to 24 years at the Special Criminal Court in June.

The Irish Times is reporting Mr McGovern says he is being denied the right to associate with other prisoners, to exercise, and to access educational and medical facilities.

The case is being taken against the governor of Portlaoise Prison, the Irish Prison Service, and the Minister for Justice.

He wants his segregation ended, and for the court to recognise the decision to isolate him is in breach of the European Convention of Human Rights.

Court documents indicate Mr McGovern is being held in isolation for his own safety.

McGovern says the situation is taking a "psychological toll" on him, and is impacting  his ability to achieve remission of his sentence.

The case will be considered by the court in November.
