Teenagers and students across the Midlands need to be educated on road safety.
That is according to Councillor Tommy Mulligan, who has welcomed new legislation banning under 18s from using e-scooters.
The Independent councillor recently called for members of An Garda Síochána to visit local schools and educate students on road safety.
As someone who works in a school himself, he says members of An Garda Síochána recently visited the school to inform students about safety precautions when dealing with fireworks.
Councillor Mulligan praised the visit, which he believes successfully delivered the message by providing real life examples to the students and telling of their own experiences around the dangers of fireworks.
Councillor Mulligan highlighted how many students are already over the age of 18 and can legally drive electric scooters, making safety education all the more necessary.
Cathaoirleach of Portlaoise Municipal District, Barry Walsh, echoed concerns over the dangers of e-scooters on local roads, saying "You can find that an e-scooter might dash out in front of you and you might not be expecting it."
Councillor Mulligan also highlighted how teenagers and young adults make up a significant proportion of those using electric scooters.
Both Councillor Walsh and Councillor Mulligan are therefore in full support of greater education on safety precautions for secondary school students.
