Laois Residents Raising Concens Over E-Scooter Driving Behaviour

Local councillor Tommy Mulligan says he has been inundated with concerns from members of the community.

Residents across the Midlands are raising concerns over dangerous driving behaviour on e-scooters.

That is according to local councillor Tommy Mulligan, who says he has been inundated with concerns from members of the community.

He says people in Portlaoise frequently contact him about the use of e-scooters in the locality and the potential dangers they pose.

The Independent representative recently called for members of An Garda Síochána to visit local schools and educate students on road safety.

As someone who works in a school himself, Councillor Mulligan says Gardaí recently visited the school to inform students about safety precautions when dealing with fireworks.

He praised the visit, believing it successfully delivered an important message to students by providing "real life examples" and sharing officers' own experiences of the dangers associated with fireworks.

Councillor Mulligan also welcomed new legislation which means those under the age of 18 cannot legally drive e-scooters.

However, he highlighted that many students are already over the age of 18 and are therefore legally permitted to use them.

As a result, he believes providing safety education and information through visits from Gardaí is a proactive approach to addressing the issue.

Councillor Mulligan says the concerns being raised by residents are serious and believes greater awareness among young people is important in helping to improve safety on local roads:
