Gareth Sheridan's bid to become president was blocked by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael Councillors.
Local representatives in Laois are urging the Government to form a referendum commission for presidential nominations.
All independent Councillors on the council alongside Labour's Marie Tuohy are making the call, as they feel the current process is 'no longer fit for purpose'.
The same group backed pharma businessman Gareth Sheridan in his bid to become president, which was blocked by Fianna Fail and Fine Gael Councillors.
It meant the local authority was unable to nominate a candidate.
Councillor Caroline Dwane Stanley is part of that group and says the process has to change:
