Laois Man Receives Suspended Sentence For Neglect Of Dogs

He admitted to failing to safeguard the health and welfare of two Siberian husky dogs.

A Laois man has been banned from keeping animals for five years.

Judge Catherine Staines also imposed a three month suspended sentence after he admitted to failing to safeguard the health and welfare of two Siberian husky dogs.

Portlaoise District Court heard that ISPCA inspector Alice Lacey called to the defendant's property and found the two dogs in a small dark shed on 20th of July 2018.

She said one of the dogs had a large amount of hair loss and they were both extremely underweight.

Ms.Lacey described the smell inside the shed as 'putrid', mostly from the dogs severely infected skin.

One of the dogs weighed just 17 kilograms and was suffering from severe alopecia and open cuts on her body.

The other dog was suffering from a skin condition.

She told the court that the dogs owner admitted he hadn't sought veterinary treatment for his pets and as a result, they were in severe discomfort.

Judge Staines told the man that he was ''an unfit person to look after animals''.

She imposed a suspended three month prison sentence, banned the defendant from keeping animals for five years and ordered them to pay €284.82.

Both dogs spent some time in ISPCA care and made full recoveries.
