Local Fine Gael party members will decide who will replace Mary Sweeney.
Mary Sweeney's replacement on Laois County Council will be chosen next month.
The Fine Gael rep officially retired last month after 22 years of service.
A party convention to co-opt a new councillor into her seat will take place online on the evening of Wednesday, 2nd February.
Candidates must be nominated by 31st January and require a nomination from at least of the Fine Gael branches in Portlaoise, Abbeyleix or Ballyroan.
Nominated candidates can address the members at the online meeting on the 2nd and be proposed and seconded.
Voting will take place by postal ballot and the count will then take place on Thursday, 24th February.
