Gardaí were alerted to the incident at a home in the town at about 7 o'clock on Monday evening.
A woman in her 50s suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Portiuncula University Hospital in Ballinasloe, where she remains in a critical condition.
A man in his 50s has since been arrested and taken to a Garda station in the county, where he can be held for up to 24 hours.
