He was being detained at a Garda station in the midlands.
A man who was arrested in relation to a serious assault in the midlands has been released without charge.
He was being detained at a Garda station in the region following the incident on Patrick Street in Mullingar on Sunday morning, which saw a man in his 50s need to be taken to hospital - it’s understood his condition is critical.
Gardai say a file will now be prepared for the director of public prosecutions.
They are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident, particularly those with camera footage, to come forward.
Anyone with any information is being asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station.
