The assault happened shortly after seven yesterday morning at a house in Ballivor.
The victim, a man in his 20s, was initially taken to Mullingar Hospital before being transferred to Beaumont hospital in Dublin.
A man in his 40s was later arrested and remains in Garda custody.
The scene has been technically examined, and Gardaí are asking anyone who witnessed the incident - or who has dashcam footage from the area - to contact Trim Garda Station.
