Two Midlands MEPs say they're working to ensure safeguards in the process of scrutinising the Mercorsur trade deal.
Barry Cowen and Nina Carberry are tabling two amendments to the International Trade Committee to boost protections to the beef sector among others.
The amendments would increase market monitoring reports and would ensure the EU Commission could protect prices and standards through an "injury to the sector" mechanism.
It comes following an Irish Farmers Journal investigation that suggests the deal will allow almost 100,000 tonnes of substandard Brazilian beef into the European market from next month.
