Station Manager Will Faulkner says smart speakers are proving popular in rural areas.
Midlands 103 is celebrating a surge in online listening, with smart speakers the fastest growing device segment.
Total listening hours climbed a further 10% in the fourth quarter of 2020, capping of a year of unprecedented streaming growth.
Over 87% are local listeners in Ireland, with UK and US residents accounting for 6% and 4% respectively.
Station Manager Will Faulkner says smart speakers are proving popular in rural areas where FM reception may be weaker. “I was talking with a gentleman last week from Finea, a small village in north Westmeath. He enjoys listening in his car but for some reason, there’s signal interference in his house so now he simply asks Alexa to tune in Midlands 103 and hey presto, problem sorted.”
“We’ve improved our music mix lately, making it really upbeat and feel good, and everybody on air is working hard to find positive, uplifting content. Listeners seem to be enjoying it because January streams broke new records, with the average online session now 76 minutes.”
Midlands 103 is currently searching for Local Heroes with Gerry Browne Jewellers and is running daily cash competitions with BuyLocalLaois.ie, BuyLocalOffaly.ie, BuyLocalAthlone.ie and BuyLocalMullingar.ie.
