The man in his 80s was assaulted in an aggravated burglary in his home.
A midlands community is in shock following an assault on a pensioner in his own home.
Fianna Fáil Councillor Liam McDaniel, who knows the victim, says he believes the aggravated burglary on Main Street in Kilbeggan on Tuesday morning was a "targeted" incident.
The owner of the home, a man in his 80s, was taken to hospital for treatment, but has since been discharged - a sum of cash was also taken from his house.
Councillor McDaniel says the incident was a stand-out for the area:
Gardaí are continuing to appeal for witnesses to the incident, particularly anyone who was in the Main Street area between midnight and 3am yesterday morning and may have seen anything, to come forward.
