Councillors are reporting seeing unsafe e-scooter driving in Portlaoise.
Councillors across the Midlands are still unclear on the rules surrounding e-scooters.
That is according to Councillor Barry Walsh, who says he has witnessed unsafe e-scooter driving in the Portlaoise area.
Recent changes to legislation have seen those under the age of 18 banned from using electric scooters.
However, Mr Walsh, Cathaoirleach of Portlaoise Municipal District, highlighted the dangers he has experienced, saying, "You can find that an e-scooter might dash out in front of you and you might not be expecting it."
His comments come following local Councillor Tommy Mulligan's call for members of An Garda Síochána to visit local schools and educate students on road safety.
Mr Walsh says that, despite the regulations surrounding the age of drivers, he is still unclear about some of the rules of the road.
Councillor Walsh acknowledged that e-scooters are a relatively new phenomenon, with teenagers and young adults making up a significant proportion of users.
He believes more needs to be done to educate young people and e-scooter users on road safety and the potential dangers involved.
Councillor Walsh says safety education is essential to improving awareness and ensuring safer roads for everyone:
