Midlands Homelessness Figures Hits Record Levels For Third Straight Month

Nationally, the number of people accessing emergency accommodation has also once again hit record levels.

The number of homeless people in the midlands has hit record levels for the third consecutive month.

145 adults accessed emergency accommodation in the region in May, an increase of three on the month prior.

The highest number of those were in Offaly at 60, followed by 58 in Westmeath and 27 in Laois.

65 children were also homeless in the region.

Nationally, the number of homeless people has once again hit record levels, at 12,441 - 3,699 of which are children.

The figure doesn't include asylum seekers, refugees, women in refuge centres and the so-called hidden homeless.

Housing Minister Darragh O'Brien welcomed the fact that the increase is less than the figures seen over the past two months.

But he says that'll be of no comfort to those directly impacted:

Despite the increase, he has defended the Government's approach to the crisis.
