A Midlands MEP is asking the European Commission to improve pay and conditions for construction apprentices and promote earlier hands on training.
Ireland's apprenticeship population reached over 24,000 in Ireland at the end of 2023, with the European Labour Authority reporting there is 13 million construction workers in the EU.
A proposal by Ciaran Mullooly is looking at establishing a voluntary EU wide framework for industry led construction site training for secondary school students, inspired by Ireland’s Safe Pass scheme.
Commissioner Roxana Mînzatu affirmed that those proposals would be considered.
