There's a growing trend of young people carrying a weapon for protection.

A Longford / Westmeath TD is calling for an knife amnesty to allow those carrying them to give their weapon up in the fight against violent crime.

Independent Kevin Boxer Moran believes the measures are necessary to combat the growing trend of young people carrying a weapon for protection.

A similar event 13 years ago saw 500 guns and over 100 knives handed in during two month period.

Deputy Moran says more education in schools could also help Gardai fight the issue:
