There's been a significant increase in the number of weapons and explosives offences in the Midlands.
New figures from the CSO shows instances of firearm, weapons, and explosive crimes are up 44%.
In the fourth quarter of last year there were 56 such offences in the Laois/Offaly Garda Divsion, compared to 39 for the same period in 2024.
In Westmeath the 2025 figure is 44, up from 40 the year previous.
The offences include weapons and explosives, discharging firearms, and the possession of offensive weapons.
