Minister Says Dropping Backstop Would Only Damage Agricultural Sector

A poll shows a small majority of farmers believe an alternative should be found.

The Minister for European Affairs says any concession on the backstop would lead to no protection for the agricultural sector.

It follows a recent poll that shows almost 50 per cent of farmers feel the government need to respond to the impasse by possibly dropping the backstop to avoid the current Brexit deadlock.

Speaking at the National Ploughing Championships, Helen McEntee says the removal of the backstop would cause more uncertainty.

She believes a time-limit would also do damage to the sector:
