A number of people have died after a car crash on the M9 near Athy.
A number of people have been killed and four others have been injured after a car was driven the wrong way on the M9 in County Kildare.
A head-on collision with another car happened in the early hours of this morning.
The crash happened near Junction 3 Athy when a car was driven southbound on the northbound carriageway of the M9 motorway at about 3 o'clock this morning.
Gardaí say a number of people have died, but have yet to release further details. Four people travelling in the second car have been seriously injured.
The driver and front-seat passenger, both women aged in their 30s, are in a critical condition - they were rushed to Tallaght University Hospital.
A woman in her 20s and a child, who were back-seat passengers, were taken to St. Luke's General Hospital and CHI Crumlin in a serious condition.
The motorway is currently closed in both directions between Junction 3 Athy and Junction 4 Castledermot, with diversions in place.
Anyone who was travelling in the area between 2 and 3 o'clock this morning, and who may have dashcam footage, is asked to contact Gardaí.
Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman, has been notified of the incident.
