The 19,000 square foot retail store is part of a €1 million refurbishment project.
A new Sports Direct store in the midlands will be open within the next seven months.
The retailer received planning permission for the development in October of last year, and will be based in Athlone TownCentre Shopping Centre.
The 19,000 square foot store is part of a €1 million refurbishment project.
As part of the development, an unoccupied restaurant will be converted into a staff canteen, an administrator's office and a storage area.
Alan Shaw, President of Athlone Chamber of Commerce says:
"It's very welcome news to hear from Athlone Towncentre that Sports Direct will open there in 2023, generating new jobs and new revenue for the economy here.
I've no doubt that customers will respond positively to their arrival and we look forward to Sports Direct opening its doors."
